Our talented orchestra consist of Junior Strings, Senior Strings, Woodwind, Percussion and Symphony Orchestra and is conducted by our own talented director Carina Brown. We are registered as Non Profit Company since August 2013, thanks to Sophia Welsh (Director of the South African National Youth Orchestra), who showed us an amazing support and helped us register. This marked the beginning of a wonderful journey for all of us. The West Coast Youth Orchestra family was born.
Carina Musici Orchestra – Where it all began
It all started in 2006, when Carina Brown founded Carinas Musici Orchestra. Due to her enormous musical talent and determination, this orchestra soon grew and took part in prestige West Boland Eisteddfod and ALMSA (Academy for Contemporary Music of South Africa) Festival in Cape Town where they received 2 gold awards and a trophy. These gold awards were only one of the many to come. Future was bright for the Carina Musici Orchestra and in 2009 it was awarded gold awards at the Paarl Valley and West Boland Eisteddfods.
West Coast Music Academy – Getting bigger and more popular
From Carina Musici Orchestra we became West Coast Music Academy. This brought new adventure for Carina Brown and for the first time our conductor realized she needs help. Our orchestra was growing at the speed of light and this was a good time to bring on another passionate musical professional onto the scene. In 2010, Lara Block joined the West Coast Music Academy and helped Carina with arranging for all the different combinations.
New Adventures and awards – Our Orchestra was moving forward and moving fast
In 2011, West Coast Music Academy was for the first time invited to attend the porestige Hugo Lambrechts Orchestra Festival. This year we also won the Primary- and High School Categories at the West Boland Eisteddfod. In 2012 , the orchestra performed more and won more awards. Times were changing and they were changing quickly. Among many we won awards at the Wes-Boland Eisteddfod and Arts Cape School Arts Festival. Ahead of us, there was nothing else, but a bright future. People started to notice our orchestra and the undeniable quality of our music.
West Coast Youth Orchestra – Us. Today.
In 2013, West Coast Music Academy became today’s West Coast Youth Orchestra. We got our website and logo and were ready to vow many music fanatics out there. The year 2013 marked our very first official South Cape Tour. We performed in Garden Route Mall (George); Denneoord Dutch Reformed Church (George) collaborating with the South Cape Children's Choir (conducted by Jan-Erik Swart); and the Dias Museum (Mossel Bay), collaborating with the South Cape Children's Choir. Our orchestra grew in demand and we were asked to perform at many places such as Christmas Services in Wellington as well as the Hugo Lambrechts String Orchestra Festival.
