Congratulations to WCYO principal players Anika Keuck on viola and Owen Dalton on oboe that were selected for the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). This is a great honour and we are exceptionally proud of these 2 students. Only two South African oboe players were chosen with Owen being one of them. Anika has been chosen for SANYO for the 4th consecutive year. No small feat for such young players. Tutor Lize Brown on flute & piccolo serves on the SANYO organising committee, but will also be joining SANYO as a player this year. They will be rehearsing and performing with SANYO in Cape Town, from 10 – 17 July. Your hard work, dedication and passion for music has certainly paid off.

The WCYO Symphony Orchestra achieved Gold at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod on 21 May 2016. Congratulations!

WCYO Symphony orchestra gave a memorable and touching performance on Thursday 17 March at Hopefield High School, collaborating with their high school and primary school choirs that made their debut. The school choirs are under the new reins of Ms Lize Brown. The WCYO Junior Strings gave a lovely opening performance, followed by a variety of genres performed by the Symphony Orchestra. The evening ended with the high school and primary school choirs – accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra – and a Grand Finale with both choirs, the orchestra, and vocalists Lize Brown and Rosa Lintvelt. They performed the touching song, Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen. The audience was clearly moved by this final song.
We would like to thank Hopefield High School for the opportunity, and hope to collaborate again in the future. 

A warm welcome to D'mitri Linnerd, joining the WCYO staff as our EPWP worker. D'mitri is very passionate and will be a great asset on the WCYO team!

WCYO entered for the Klassieke Kollig competition presented by Die Burger (a fundraising event for Die Burger Christmas Funds). For this competition, choirs and vocal ensembles enter to be recorded and the Top 20 items are chosen to perform at the Barnyard Theatre in Durbanville on 24 & 25 September 2015. WCYO collaborated with vocalists Keagen Gertse, Darryn Prinsloo and Lize Brown, accompanying Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, and also collaborated with the Vredenburg High School Choir accompanying Droom van my geluk. Congratulations to Keagen, Darryn and Lize that reached the Finals (performing Hallelujah and The Prayer), and the VHS Choir that reached the Semi-Finals (performing Droom van my geluk and Masithi Amen).
WCYO Symphony Orchestra was once again invited to play at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre’s Orchestra Concert on Sunday 20 September 2015 and gave a stunning performance of Chinese Dance (from The Nutcracker); Finale of the William Tell Overture; and Theme from Mission Impossible. We also surprised the audience with the WCYO Percussion Orchestra (Boomwhackers) performing an arrangement of Palladio by Karl Jenkins. Click here for more photos.
WCYO participated at the West-Boland Eisteddfod on 21 August and achieved the following results. Congratulations to the trophy winners as awarded at the annual Prestige Event on 18 September.

Lower Brass Ensemble  - 1 Gold
String Ensemble - 2 Cum Laude

A fabulous concert was held on 5 September at Curro Langebaan, with the Cape Welsh Choir performing with the WCYO Symphony Orchestra. CWC performed hits such as An American Trilogy and Every Time I Feel the Spirit. School choirs of Hopefield High School and Curro Langebaan Private School also performed, as well as the WCYO Junior Strings and WCYO Percussion Orchestra (Boomwhackers). We are proud of the Brass and String Ensembles of Diazville Primary School that achieved Gold and 2 Cum Laudes respectively at the recent Wes-Boland Eisteddfod! (These children receive weekly group classes as part of the WCYO Outreach Program.)

Congratulations to 4 WCYO players that has been chosen for the Wind- an String Orchestras of the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). They will be attending the winter course in Potchefstroom from 27 June to 2 July 2015, and will perform in Potch and Braamfontein on 2 & 3 July. Keagen Gertse (violin) and Anika Keuck (viola) in front; Darryn Prinsloo (euphonium) and Pieter Strydom (double bass) at the back. WCYO player Lize Brown is also on SANYO's organising committee.
On Sunday 21 June, the WCYO held a Father's Day Fundraising concert for Double Bassist, Didi, to raise funds for her to attend a Double Bass Masterclass in Germany. WCYO performed with Zanne Stapelberg and James Bhemgee at the lovely D'Aria Function Venue in Durbanville. 
Stellenbosch Eisteddfod 2015 Prize-Giving held on 7 June: WCYO Symphony Orchestra won the Alet de Vos Trophy for Best Youth Orchestra, for the second consecutive year! And to our surprise, we received a special award for one of the best items at this year's Eisteddfod!
WCYO member, Lourens Pretorius (photo), also won the Zoltan Kovats Trophy for Best Double Bass player.
The WCYO Symphony Orchestra participated at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod on 16 May, performing a Classical- and Jazz Programme. They achieved 2 Cum Laudes and it was a stunning performance! Click here to view more photos.


On Friday 15 May, WCYO performed with Manuel Escorcio & Belia Lourens in Langebaan. With hits such as Any Dream will Do, Love Changes Everything and Memories, accompanied by the orchestra, the evening was truly wonderful! School choirs of Longacres, Topolino and Curro Private Schools, as well as Vredenburg High School also performed and touched the audience with a final mass choir item, You Raise Me Up, with Manuel and Belia. The WCYO Symphony Orchestra held their annual practice camp at Club Elani Resort (Misverstand Dam, Moorreesburg) on 17-19 April 2015. The orchestra rehearsed for 18 hours and focused mainly on new repertoire for upcoming performances. Click here to view all the photos. 

The first successful West Coast Festival for Musicians was held on 6 & 7 March at Curro Langebaan Private School. With a wide variety of workshops, from Ukeleke, Guitar, Brass, Songwriting, Drum-kit, Bands, Djembe, Boomwackers, Body Percussions, Singing, Keyboard and Arts & Culture and Orff training for teachers, to various Band and ensemble performances, the weekend greatly contributed to excitement in the West Coast community! The WCYO Symphony Orchestra performed at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hopefield, on Sunday 1 March 2015 at the Youth Service. The congregation enjoyed the performance, especially It is well with my soul, performed by guest singer, Keagan Gertse.
Carina Brown, Director & Conductor of the WCYO, was invited to the Western Cape Government Cultural Affairs Awards Ceremony, yesterday in the Baxter Theatre. To her surprise, she was awarded The Minister’s Special Award for Outstanding Achievement for Women in the Arts and Culture. We are extremely proud of her!!!

WCYO performed at the Dutch Reformed Church in Vredenburg on 23 November 2014. It was such a blessing to hear all-time favourite Christmas Carols, with the Orchestra accompanying the congregation.

The WCYO Prize-Giving was held on Friday 21 November 2014. All players were awarded for their participations during the year. Congratulations to the 7 Floating Trophy winners for their Leadership in the Symphony Orchestra:  Lanz Ebersöhn (Concert Master), Anika Keuck, Darius Becker, Nicole de Wet, Cheryl-Lee Cupido, Marlon van Rooyen, Tanielle Meyer.

We are proud of 3 WCYO players that are chosen for the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). Darius Becker (Double Bass), Pieter Strydom (Double Bass) and Anika Keuck (Violin). They will be performing as follow:

WCYO successfully launched a new Outreach project on Saturday 8 November at the WCYO Centre in Langebaan. 40 Children from surrounding schools attended the launch and were tested for String, Percussion and Brass instruments. Tuition will start January 2015. Thank You to HCI Foundation, Blue Shield Security, Saldanha Bay Municipality, Club Mykonos, Old Mutual Vredenburg, Department of Arts and Culture, Dr. Riaan Swart, Noordhoek Primary School, Diazville community and WCMA Staff for contributing towards this event.

The WCYO Symphony Orchestra was once again invited to play at the Hugo Lambrecths Orchestra Festival on 21 September 2014. They performed Radetzky March, In the Hall of the Mountain King and Billy Jean. It was an superb performance!

On Friday 12 September 2014, the WCYO performed with guest artist, Steve Hofmeyr, at the Curro Langebaan School Hall. It was truly phenomenal! With a packed hall, and the orchestra accompanying Steve's hits such as I am I said, Sweet Caroline, Pampoen and Liefling, it guaranteed a night that will never be forgotten. Thanks to all the orchestra members, supporters, parents, WCYO staff, organisers, Jes Marketing, Amanda Singleton, the audience, and most of all, Steve! We experienced what an amazing singer and humble person you are! 

On Saturday 2 August 2014, the WCYO had a spectacular concert with singer Tobi Jooste. The orchestra complimented Tobi’s rich baritone voice with a variety of songs - a perfect match. WCYO performed Classical & Jazz Repertoire such as Quando, Quando, Quando and Starry Starry Night, and the audience was surprised by the Long Acres Private School & Vredenburg High School Choirs with Orchestral accompaniment. A very successful evening!

The West Coast Youth Orchestra performed with local singer and songwriter, Jo Folscher, on 26 June 2014 in Hopefield. It was an ecstatic, unforgettable evening with people attending from far! Congratulations to the West Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra that achieved Cum Laude at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod Orchestra Festival on Saturday 17 May 2014. The Orchestra played In the Hall of the Mountain King and Radetzky March. Besides their performance, the adjudicators were very impressed with the discipline, behaviour and dress code of the orchestra.  Well done WCYO, keep it up!!
